YOU ARE HERE
A gallery of photos from my 18,000-mile motorcycle ride through the US and Canada.
Hello, and welcome to my YOU ARE HERE Website.
In 2015, at age 57, I took a three-month motorcycle journey across the North American continent, largely alone. I flew my wife out to join me at four stops. Here is an approximate map of the route.
More recently, I wrote and published a book about this “trip of a lifetime” entitled You Are Here. However, other than the cover images, I could not include photos in this book. Thus, the primary purpose of this site is a photographic companion guide to the text.
The original plan was for two photo sections. The first, “Gallery,” is complete, and includes what I think are the best 40 or so captioned images from the trip. The second, currently under construction, will be entitled “Day by Day Images.” If I ever complete it, it will post daily photos, many of lower quality, but with more sites and people. Time and fan response will determine if I ever get around to finishing this.
Some things that I discuss in the book but not in this website are the motivations that led me to make this trip and the detailed planning of the route to and from the Arctic Ocean. Also not discussed here are the powerful emotions of mystery and awe that I experienced along the way, and how those affected me in the moment and in the long term. For those viewers interested in this aspect of my adventure, I provide links to sites where the book can be purchased. It comes in paperback and kindle versions, for now, and is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and elsewhere.

OK, what does You Are Here mean? It is a small play on words. In one sense, it refers to the pseudo-miracle of the little blue Google Maps dot on my smart phone. This is something I would have given a lot for during my more youthful adventures, before GPS and the Internet existed. Finding out where you are after you have been lost for a while can produce a powerful emotional impact. I used my smartphone a lot on this trip.
In another sense, the phrase You Are Here is an homage to a sense of place in the universe, another powerful emotional and spiritual (although not religious) sensation I have experienced a few times in my life, including on this journey. These experiences are one of the primary themes of the book; hence the title.
